Color Fields

Color Fields is an evolving series of oil paintings that moves between still life and abstraction. Although started before moving to California, the state’s floral diversity and windswept coast have become major influences on this series’ development. Flowers, fruit, vessels, and other objects are isolated within broad, flattened planes of color, where spacing and contrast become as important as the act of observation. The works are structured around oppositions—living and dead, vibrant and rotting, broken and whole—whose tensions are not resolved but held in close proximity. Drawing on modernist painting and the tradition of still life, the series explores the point at which an observed object becomes a shape, a symbol, or an icon.
